You can break up by family or by age groups and choose half-day or full-day. Heavenly has the best views of all and is a little less expensive than Northstar. It also offers full-day family private lessons for up to six and a village at the base of the Gondola. At Squaw Valley , you can do half-day family lessons for up to five people. Squaw also has a nice village and lake views.
The interesting thing about Squaw is that the beginner terrain is at the top of the mountain, so do not get nervous when you head up high during your lesson! The half-day lesson is a little less than the Northstar half-day lesson, but you have five people in a group instead of six. I have 2 new skiers, 2 mid-level, and one beginner snow boarder. I want to stay at a place that is affordable, with a hot tub, and within walking or shuttle distance to the gondola at Heavenly.
One 19 yr old beginner skier, one 19 yr old beginner snowboarder, one 24 yr old mid- to advanced skier, one 52 yr old mid- to advanced skier and one beginner skier. It would be great to have a group lesson for just our family with an instructor. The Lakeland Village is affordable, has spacious accommodations and offers a free shuttle to the gondola. It has two resort hot tubs — one near the lake with nice views of the mountains.
On the other hand, Zalanta is directly across the street from the village and gondola but is much more expensive. Thanks so much for writing this article! It was so helpful in choosing a Tahoe ski vacation for our family. Very informative write up.
Thanks for this thorough article. It really helped me decide which 2 mountains I want to try when I trek out to Tahoe this winter. Hi we are traveling with my 2. What precautions should we take and what part of tahoe will make sense for us to stay? Ps: We are not too used to the cold.
Northstar is a little bit lower in elevation and may be a few degrees warmer. It is a family-friendly resort. Just be sure to protect your baby from the cold with proper outerwear and extra blankets, and keep that tadpole hydrated. All rights reserved. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved. Join Date Dec Posts 3, As others have mentioned, Kirkwood has much, much better expert skiing. The skiing at Kirkwood is also fantastically fun for kids who are good enough to venture off the groomers which is basically all kids except rank beginners. I think most intermediate skiers enjoy it, too.
Kirkwood is more alpine and diverse and has a lot more nooks and crannies to explore. Northstar has a lot of runs, but it's mostly tree-lined trails, which, to me, all seem the same after a while. What Kirkwood lacks, and Northstar has, however, is apres-skiing. If your family wants to ski for hours and then putter around the resort base, Kirkwood is very limited. Whereas Northstar has a little Whistler-like village at the base with ice skating, spas, a small cinema, some shopping, sushi, etc.
Also, storm skiing in Tahoe is rad. I mean, it's kind of what we live for. I'll spew my extensive ignorance Quando paramucho mi amore de felice carathon.
Mundo paparazzi mi amore cicce verdi parasol. Questo abrigado tantamucho que canite carousel. Covers both of your bases. It being holidays, prepare for gnarly traffic unless you're staying at the base of the mountain. If coverage is spotty, which it certainly can be still in late December, Heavenly and Northstar have excellent snowmaking systems. I realize there is not much hope for a bullfighting forum.
I understand that most of you would prefer to discuss the ingredients of jacket fabrics than the ingredients of a brave man. I know nothing of the former. But the latter is made of courage, and skill, and grace in the presence of the possibility of death. If someone could make a jacket of those three things it would no doubt be the most popular and prized item in all of your closets. Privacy policy. How does Heavenly compare to Kirkwood? The height of the mountain is the difference in height between the lowest and highest point. Tall mountains can offer longer pistes, better views, and often better snowfall. The opening hours is the average number of hours per day that the resort is open for skiing.
Long opening hours mean you can go for an early ski, or have a long sleep and go later. The summit is higher above sea level. And they learn to ski just about all of Kirkwood. Including Thunder Saddle and many of the chutes. Last season I rolled up to Elevator Shaft to skier's right of Jim's Rock to take a peek over and a bunch of five and six year olds rolled up right after me with their Jet's coach.
After I watched all six of them drop in and ski down to Sentinel, I knew I had to do it to. I then skied over to their group and congratulated them that they had skied it better than me. Because they had. I love Vail Resorts and I can't say anything bad about any of their other resorts, but Kirkwood is very special. Tony tseeb Skier. Vail has not made any lift improvements since taking over Kirkwood over 8 years ago, and closes Kirkwood too early with feet of snow in some years.
Kirkwood also gets busy on Saturdays during prime season, sometimes filling or too slowly filling parking causing traffic entering the valley to back up a mile or more towards So Lake Tahoe. If all lifts are running, liftlines are usually not bad except for Sunrise. SSSdave life is short precious So anyone considering visiting the resort regularly needs to consider that.
Also it is a long distance from infrastructure so one needs to be logistically independent. The dedicated timbercreek is great for learning, however as always things can be conditions dependent and you will need to evaluate last minute decisions. Because kw is less manicured, in dry spells it may get icy or crusty, in those times you may want to shift to HV upper mtn or NS with more intensive snowmaking system and more grooming. You can all play this by ear. At hv, the boulder learning area if open is also separate from the hordes and mellow but slow lift.
Then you can option to do HV when you can't get into kirkwood. Even the lessons too, potentially if you can't into Kirkwood due to conditions, the ski school can potentially shift your lesson or favorite private instructor to HV.
To avoid some of the logistics there are big benefits to kw slopeside, especially with a family. If you book early with the passholder earlybird specials, and can fit in 1 room it will not be too expensive.
Jets will produce awesome skiers I agree and not just in skills. I think each resort and the patrons selfselects a bit based on personality; and the kids and dynamic are going to mirror that.
