Lights was introduced to Beau Bokan, the lead vocalist of metalcore band Blessthefall at a Taking Back Sunday concert in Los Angeles, and the two quickly started dating.
After becoming engaged in September , they were married on May 12, and Lights added "Bokan" to her last name now stylised as Poxleitner-Bokan. Their first child, Rocket Wild, was born in February In , the family moved to Mission, British Columbia. Born in Timmins, Ontario, Lights lived in the Philippines and Jamaica during her elementary school years. Lights' mother home schooled the kids; but, one day a week the singer's father would take over.
In the family moved back to Canada and almost immediately, nine year-old Lights got her hands on a guitar. By eleven she'd learned a handful of chords, which she used to write her first song.
Then, at thirteen she turned her attention to production. As a teenager Lights spent much of her time writing songs up in her attic bedroom, which she dubbed Starry Night studios after her favorite Van Gogh painting. By eighteen Lights had moved out of her parents' house and was living in Toronto with only her pet tarantula Lance to keep her company. In this state of near-isolation Lights finally found her signature sound- a merging of classic pop songwriting with deeply intimate yet universally appealing lyrics.
She wrote "February Air," a poignant ode to the chill of winter love, which became the first of four Lights songs used by Old Navy in the company's spring ad campaign.
Though her star was clearly on the rise, it was Lights' online profile that really solidified her fan base. How many people can do that and come out alive at the other end? I tell her all the time. Being able to illustrate and write and colour her own graphic novel was a huge accomplishment. Then she started to reach out to people she looked up to like Brain K. Vaughn and other artists who had written these amazing comic books. She befriended these creative that she looked up to and they took her under their wing and made sure she did things the right way.
She takes a lot more pride in it than just sticking her name on something.
