These days, if you go see a Tim Burton movie you are in effect going to watch Johnny and Helena do their weird thing, probably in outlandish costumes. This is especially grating when it comes to Johnny Depp. Depp has starred in countless films, and many of his roles have become instant classics. Nobody does weird better than Johnny Depp Even Depp's non-Burton roles are weird. Thompson performance was fantastic. His wonderful Jack Sparrow brought the weird home to more mainstream audiences in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise of which I've only seen the first two films.
I wasn't a fan of Depp's Willy Wonka, but it sure was strange. So I appreciate the fact that Depp probably enjoys this sort of bizarre character and finds fulfillment in playing them in one way or another across most of his acting roles. And Tim Burton isn't helping matters by casting him in every picture. Nor is Tim Burton helping Tim Burton. Certainly Burton has a flare for the outlandish, but at some point no matter how weird or colorful or macabre his films are, they've also started to feel weighted-down by their insistence on doing it over and over again.
What would be truly odd and satisfying, I think, would be to see Burton try his hand at something actually new. Of course, this led to the iconic George and Bailey birth scene that fans still love to this day.
